Operations management deals with operational planning and control issues, and is needed in all sectors of the society especially transportation engineering. One of the challenges to operations manager is how to make use of the available resources in the best way for meeting a certain objective. Quantitative approaches are inevitably needed in tackling many of such problems. Operational research is a discipline to utilize advanced analytical methods for making better decisions in industries and corporate organizations. It deals with problem formulation and application of analytical methods to assist in decision-making of operational problems in planning and control. It is an applied mathematics subject and is also a course in many engineering and transportation area.
Statistical Analysis and Modeling in Transportation

Statistical Analysis and Modeling in Transportation is course characterized with the practical application of theoretical knowledge. This course introduces the application of statistical analysis theory and methods in traffic-related fields in detail, aiming to explain the concept, theoretical method and practical application of data in transportation. The objective of this course is to let students understand the concepts and theoretical methods, train students to understand the basic ideas of data analysis and the thinking mode and research methods of big data workers; The objective is also to let students know Python, a data analysis tool, and provide students with a very effective tool to capture, analyze and display traffic data, which is very important for data analysis and modeling. This course is a combination of theory and practice, training students to use a variety of statistical analysis methods to analyze and model traffic systems.
Transportation and Environment

The course of Transportation and environment is interdisciplinary, drawing upon transportation, environment, urban planning, statistics, economics, and policy. The course covers both the theoretical and practical aspects of relevant topics including mobile emissions inventory estimation, renewable fuels, air quality impact and life cycle benefit assessment of alternative fuels/vehicles, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and urban sprawl, and congestion mitigation and air quality. After this course, students will recognize the importance of transportation-related environmental problems in the global, national, regional and local context; understand and identify transportation policies attempted or considered in the China, and to evaluate the transferability of policies tried elsewhere; evaluate the effectiveness of these policies with respect to mobility and environmental quality; search for and propose potential policies to solve identified problems, especially at the regional level.
Quantitative analysis method

"Quantitative analysis method" is a very practical course, based on statistics, operations research and other mathematical knowledge to solve practical problems in engineering. Through this course, students will have a very comprehensive understanding of engineering data collection, and be able to apply a variety of mathematical methods to analyze various engineering data, and then reveal the inherent laws of engineering, and provide a scientific basis for solving practical engineering problems . The main content of this course includes statistics, optimization and other methods. While introducing quantitative analysis methods, it also considers actual cases in engineering, and uses commonly used mathematical analysis software to solve practical engineering problems. The prerequisites for this course are advanced mathematics and probability theory.

In March 2022, Associate Professor He Hongdi synthesized typical cases from campus epidemic prevention efforts and designed teaching content for Operations Research in the context of campus epidemic control. This included transportation problems, knapsack problems, and combinatorial optimization problems, integrating ideological elements such as the spirit of volunteerism, the investigative rigor of scientists, and the shared responsibility of the academic community. This approach achieved a profound integration of professional knowledge in Operations Research with ideological education.
This innovative teaching method was widely appreciated by students, who reported gaining not only theoretical knowledge and methods in Operations Research but also practical insights on applying these principles to real-world problems. The approach was also endorsed by the University's Teaching Development Center, leading to an invitation to present at the university's Teaching and Learning Forum. It was further highlighted by the Operations Research Society of China and covered in video interviews by media outlets like The Paper and Shanghai Education Television. Additionally, numerous prominent media channels, including People's Daily, Xinhua News, Jiefang Daily, Xinmin Evening News, Shanghai Science and Technology Network, and Shanghai Education News Network, reported on this initiative.
